FinXTech: “Pathward Financial Exec on How To Do Banking as a Service”

Pathward's President Anthony Sharett recently spoke with Kiah Lau Haslett, Banking and Fintech Editor of Bank Director and its fintech resource, FinXTech.

In this interview, Sharett talked about Pathward’s deep experience in providing banking as a service (BaaS) and developing successful fintech partnerships. He also explored the critical role of risk and compliance in partner banking, Pathward’s approach to technology and data, and how the bank is developing products to advance its mission of increasing financial inclusion and access.

The two also discussed the bank’s newly introduced Partner Solutions business line. Sharett explained: “We recently marked our 20th anniversary in the payments industry and have been pioneers in the space. We decided to rename the business line [from Banking as a Service] to indicate our cocreation and innovation alongside our fintech partners. In the past, partners would bring us a solution, capability or product they wanted to launch, and then we found a way to onboard that and launch that program. Today, Pathward is part of that product development process through our technology and business development teams. Co-creating and innovating helps us understand customer needs and build sustainable, financially inclusive products.”

As Pathward celebrates 20 years in the industry, Sharett also said that the bank is continuously “skating where the hockey puck is going” and planning for what’s next, especially as embedded finance and payments continue to rapidly evolve.
